How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost in Baltimore? (2026 Guide)

A bathroom remodel in the Baltimore area usually runs $8,000 to $40,000. That's a wide range, I know. So let me break it down the way I would if we were standing in your bathroom together.
The three kinds of bathroom projects
| Project | What it usually includes | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh | Paint, new vanity and faucet, mirror, lighting, hardware, maybe a new floor | Under $8,000 to around $10,000 |
| Mid-range remodel | New tile floor and shower or tub surround, vanity, toilet, fixtures, lighting | $10,000 to $25,000 |
| Full gut | Everything down to the studs: new plumbing, shower or tub, tile, vanity, ventilation, electrical | $25,000 to $40,000 and up |
Most hall bathrooms we do, in places like Catonsville, Columbia and Pikesville, land in the middle. Primary bathrooms with a custom tile shower and double vanity land toward the top.
What the individual pieces cost
If you're trying to figure out where the money goes, here are real ranges for common upgrades:
- New vanity, faucet, and mirror: $1,500 to $3,500
- New tile floor: $1,500 to $4,000, depending on the size of the room (thinking about the rest of the house too? Here's hardwood vs. LVP flooring for Baltimore homes)
- Retiling a shower surround: $3,000 to $8,000, depending on size and tile
- Paint, new hardware, and a light fixture: $800 to $1,500
What makes a bathroom remodel cost more
Tile and labor. Tile is where bathrooms get expensive. Not just the tile itself, but the hours to set it right: waterproofing behind the shower, a level floor, clean cuts, straight grout lines. This is the part you don't want done cheap, because a bad shower install leaks into your walls.
Moving plumbing. Keeping the toilet, sink, and shower where they are saves real money. Moving them means opening floors and walls and rerouting pipes.
What's behind the walls. In older Baltimore homes, from Mount Vernon to Dundalk, we often find water damage, soft subfloor, or old galvanized pipes once the tile comes off. A good contractor tells you up front this is possible, and prices it in writing before fixing it.
Tub versus walk-in shower. Converting a tub to a walk-in shower is one of the most common requests we get. It's very doable, and it involves new plumbing work, waterproofing, and glass.
Ventilation and electrical. A proper exhaust fan and GFCI outlets aren't extras. They're part of doing it right, and they protect the new bathroom from moisture damage.
Permits. Plumbing and electrical work generally needs a permit. We handle that for you. If a contractor tells you permits aren't needed for a full remodel, that's a red flag.
Where your money goes furthest
If you're on a tighter budget, here's my honest advice:
- Don't skimp on the shower. Waterproofing and tile install are where problems start. Spend here.
- A new vanity and lighting change the whole room for a fraction of a full remodel.
- Don't overspend on fixtures. Most people can't tell a $200 faucet from a $2,000 one. Buy good quality, not luxury.
- Keep the layout if you can. Moving plumbing eats budget that could go into tile and finishes you'll actually see.
If you're thinking about resale, I wrote a separate guide on which bathroom upgrades pay off when you sell.
Watch out for the lowball quote
A bathroom quote that's thousands under everyone else usually means no permit, thin waterproofing, or a scope that's missing pieces. Those pieces come back as change orders. I've seen a "cheaper" quote end up costing $3,000 more than the honest one.
How we price your bathroom
I come out, look at your bathroom, ask how you use it, and talk through options at a few price points. Then you get a written estimate that spells out demo, materials, fixtures, permits, and cleanup. If you want to see our work, look at our bathroom remodeling page.
