Painting Cabinets vs. Replacing Them: The Smart Way to Update a Baltimore Kitchen

Kitchen with wood cabinets and granite countertops in a Baltimore area home

Almost every homeowner who calls me about a kitchen asks the same thing in a different way: "What is the cheapest way to do this?" My answer is almost always the same. Look at the cabinets first. They are the biggest line item in a kitchen, and they are the one place where a good decision can save you real money.

So the question is not really paint or replace. The question is whether the cabinets you have are worth keeping.

Why cabinets decide the budget

New cabinets are usually the single largest cost in a kitchen remodel. That is why the numbers jump so much between the first level of work and the second. Here are the ranges I give people, the same ones in my post on what a kitchen remodel costs in Baltimore:

LevelWhat it involvesTypical cost
Cosmetic refreshPainted cabinets, new countertops, backsplash, hardware, lightingAround $15,000
Mid-range remodelNew cabinets, countertops and appliances, same layoutAround $35,000
Full gutLayout change, plumbing and electrical$60,000 and up

The gap between the first row and the second is mostly the cabinets. If yours are solid, you can stay in the first row and still end up with a kitchen that feels new. These are honest ranges, not quotes. The real number comes after I walk your kitchen and open your cabinets myself.

When painting is the right call

Paint your cabinets when most of these are true:

  • The boxes are solid. Frames are square and sturdy, with no soft spots or water damage.
  • The doors and drawers still work. Hinges hold, drawers slide, nothing is pulling out of the wood.
  • You like the layout. The sink, stove and refrigerator are where you want them, and traffic flows.
  • You want the money for other things. A good cabinet job lets you spend on counters, backsplash and lighting instead.

Many Baltimore kitchens fit this. Plenty of the houses in Towson, Catonsville and Parkville have well-built wood cabinets from decades ago. The wood is often better than a lot of what you can buy today. They only look tired. For those homes, new cabinets would be money spent on something you already own.

When you should replace them

Painting is not a fix for everything. I will tell you straight when it is the wrong move:

  • The layout does not work. Paint will not move a refrigerator or open up a cramped corner.
  • The boxes are damaged. Water damage, rot, or frames that have come apart cannot be hidden with paint.
  • You are changing the layout anyway. Once walls, plumbing or electrical are moving, new cabinets usually make sense.
  • You are replacing the counters and the cabinets are marginal. At that point you are most of the way to a remodel. The signs your kitchen needs a full remodel are worth reading before you decide.

I would rather tell you to keep your cabinets than sell you new ones you do not need. I would also rather tell you to replace them than paint boxes that will fail in two years.

What a proper cabinet paint job looks like

This is where I get serious, because it is where most of the bad work happens. Painted cabinets live a hard life. Hands, steam, grease, and doors opening dozens of times a day. A fast coat of wall paint peels in about a year.

A proper job means:

  • Taking off the doors, drawers and hardware
  • Cleaning off kitchen grease so the paint can grip
  • Sanding and repairing dings and old finish
  • Priming with a bonding primer
  • A durable cabinet-grade finish, usually in Benjamin Moore or Sherwin-Williams products
  • Protecting your floors and furniture the whole time, and cleaning up when we are done each day

You can see how we approach it on our cabinet painting page. I do not put a flat price on cabinet painting alone in this post, because it depends on how many doors and drawers you have and their condition. Ask for a free written estimate and you will get a real number for your kitchen.

What $10,000 can still do

People ask me whether $10,000 is enough. It is not enough for a full remodel with new cabinets. But if your cabinet boxes are solid, a budget like that can change the room:

  • Paint the cabinets instead of replacing them
  • Add new hardware and better lighting
  • Put in a new backsplash
  • Repaint the walls and trim with interior painting

Order matters. Cabinets, then counters, then backsplash, then final paint. If you want the timeline, I laid it out in how long a kitchen remodel takes. A refresh runs one to two weeks, and countertops are measured after the cabinets are done.

Older Baltimore houses

A 1920s rowhouse in Canton or Hampden often has a small kitchen with plaster walls and wood cabinets that are older than I am. If the layout works, painting is often a good move there. If the home was built before 1978, we follow lead-safe practices on any work that disturbs old paint, and we handle permits if the project needs them.

Get more than one number, but compare the same thing

When you collect quotes, compare what is included: who does the work, whether demolition, permits, plumbing and electrical are in the price, and who you call afterward. I wrote a whole post about a lower quote that ended up costing a homeowner $3,000 more, and the lesson is simple: read the quote like a contract.
